The spaces we inhabit shape who we are, and vice versa. Much can be read about a city, about its people, in the entrances to its buildings. Traces of the private sphere leak out through these thresholds.
We cross these doorways as we leave and return home every day. Every day we check our mailboxes, unlock our gates, clean our boots. How do we balance the practical against the aesthetic? Do we make time in our hectic schedules to tend our gardens, repair the damage from storms or daily wear, organize our balconies? Do we favor ornate and heavy gates, or light and functional ones? Smooth surfaces or cobblestones? Do we prioritize security? Nature? Accessibility? Privacy? Legibility?
How rigidly do our buildings follow the original intentions of their architects? Do they evolve organically, adapting to the needs of their inhabitants? Do they live?
