📺: Mr Inbetween

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching television series Mr Inbetween, a daring mix of action, crime thriller, relationship drama, and dark comedy. The deadpan delivery makes this take on the “loveable criminal” genre very refreshing.

Ray, the main character, a hitman, is really good at his job. He’s also a boyfriend, a caring father, a friend, and a fiercely loyal brother. He has to balance the tension between being the needs of his family and friends and those of his criminal jobs.

The writing, simple and unpretentious, is top-notch, with good absurd dialogue —a hitman joining anger-management group therapy sessions, conversations with a young girl about whether Jesus or unicorns are real, are there aliens, etc..

The acting is also outstanding. The action scenes are tense, though most tend to get resolved relatively quickly.

Pity only 3 seasons were shot.
